Many people are scared of speaking in public, because of the fear of embarrassment and making mistakes. The anxiety over mistakes makes the mistakes inevitable. When you have an anxiety, this is the biggest mistake of all. The professional speakers make mistakes sometimes either. However, they do not consider these mistakes as a major hindrance to success. The whole philosophy behind this is to accept that mistakes may happen sometimes, and to make sure you can recover from them fast enough.

The proper way to get over a mistake is to observe it without excessive emotions, take appropriate action, restore your composure, and focus on what to say next. Thinking too much about an error and feeling bad about it simply adds up to the confusion. You have to leave it behind and move ahead.

One very important thing to bear in mind all the time is that you cannot please everyone in the audience. There will be some people who will think you are a moron for making a mistake, but many will not even notice it. Some will even admire you for the way you got over it so easy. Many will feel relieved to find out that at the end of the day you are human. Others will not care one way or another. Making mistakes will give you some useful feedback for improvement. Also mistakes will give you a single-trial learning, meaning that it is quite certain you will not make the same mistake again. You have to ask yourself the question: “What is the worst thing that will happen if I make a mistake during the speech?” Nobody will sentence you to death for making a mistake during your speech.

Individuals who are afraid of speaking in public see their oncoming speech as a social situation of complete failure and disaster. They visualize all the possible ways that will lead them to fail horribly. This is what the experts psychologists call a method of preparation of “negative anticipation”. Every time this happens, you have to shake yourself out and say, “stop it” clear and loud. Imagine that you are giving that speech the way you want to. If you anticipate success, it is very likely to achieve it. You have to mentally prepare that you are doing it confidently and smoothly to an appreciating audience. Do not worry about your performance and be excited about the subject of your speech. Think about the importance of what you have to say to the others and that they want to hear about it.

You have to love your listeners. If you wish your audiences to like you, you have to like your audience first. Leave the past behind, especially the bad experiences. A person may have an anxiety of speaking because of embarrassing incident in the past, quite often in the childhood. Events like this can be very traumatizing for children and adults as well, and can lead to a long and paralyzing fear. If you had such an incident and it is at the bottom of your fear, visit an expert specialized in dealing with phobias. Remember that phobias are nothing to be ashamed of. Researches show that 80% of people have at least one in a lifetime. Phobias are curable, just need to be diagnosed correctly and the appropriate therapy has been applied.

Before speech, you need to get some rest and avoid hassles. Where possible, avoid stressful events that could worsen your ability to concentrate and speak calmly and with the necessary confidence. Try to avoid mood-altering substances. Eat lightly, or not at all, one hour before speaking because a full stomach can lower your energy level and concentration. Get your best look, take some time with your appearance. Looking good will contribute to your confidence. And remember to breathe. The anxiety contracts the muscles in the chest and throat. If you have a restricted airway and not enough oxygen, your voice will start squeaking. The deep breathing delivers enough oxygen to the lungs and brain and expands the throat and chest.

We all need to realize that fear is a natural survival mechanism. Fear may motivate us, or have exactly the opposite effect on us. In life threatening situations fear motivates us to be careful, but it also can be a huge problem when it interferes with our goals and achievements. Our success depends on the way we conduct ourselves according to the rewards we want, rather than the things we fear.

There is not uncommon for people that suffer frequently from panic attacks to get depressed. Feeling like you can’t do a thing to stop the panic attack from happening, having to avoid certain places, people and situations and because of that loosing friends and feeling that you are a misfit, feeling that there’s something wrong with you like loosing your mind or going insane, not being able to get help because you’re too ashamed to talk with anybody about your condition, that’s really depressing.

No matter what the definition might be, is clear that panic attacks are a psychological condition that everybody can experience once in their lives, and unfortunately, it’s not a very pleasant experience.

Panic attacks can occur anytime with no obvious reasons or triggers, but in fact they do have a strong link to your inner self and the way that a certain thing or situation makes you feel. When this happens, your body is overwhelmed by chemicals that make you either fight or run. However, when this occurs neither of the above might be an option to be considered ( think that you’re stuck in a bus filled with people) and this is why, by doing nothing, all that anxiety and chemicals that your body produces make you feel nausea, stomach pains or discomfort, you start getting cold sweats and you start getting trembles, etc.

Of course, when a panic attack happens, the first thing that you want to do is get away from the place you’re in and find a safe place in which you can calm down. Once you do that, you’ll see that you feel drained and light headed and scared of what just happened and concerned of what might have happened. Needless to say, this makes you whole day a bad one, and if this is an experience that repeats itself, you might get depressed and keep away from the places/people/situations that make you feel that way.

What you have to understand is that most people will experience anxiety at some point in their lives. This might be triggered by the loss of a job, an upcoming exam, death of a friend or relative, things that overwhelm you with stress. However, for some people this is a random experience that doesn’t repeat itself too often, and for others it begins being a day to day routine with which they have to live.

If you find yourself in a situation when panic attacks are a major part of your life and you feel that this condition doesn’t let you function properly, then you have to acknowledge that you have a problem, and seek help.

When it comes to helping people with panic attacks there are two ways to go, one is medication and the other is psychological counseling. You might want to choose on or the other or both, depending on the severity of your condition. What you have to know is that THIS CAN BE CURED and that you’re not alone and there are people that have experienced the same things and are now free of them.

Many cases of anxiety come to be because of your reactions to your everyday surroundings. In cognitive-behavioral therapy, the patient focuses less on changing their surroundings, and works more on how they respond to outside stimuli. The core belief is that all of our behavioral quirks are caused by our thoughts, not by outside factors such as the people and events around us. In this type of therapy, the change must really come from within.

<!--

The similarities to normal classes don’t stop there though. Since cognitive-behavioral therapy preaches change from within, we first need to unlearn all of our bad habits. Often times, this is the hardest part of all. When you do things for a long enough period of time, they become almost automatic, and it’s no small task to just quit doing them. Once you’ve cleansed yourself of habitual responses that are causing the problem, you then need to learn to react in a more constructive way. It’s no small task to change your thought process though, and this is where cognitive-behavioral therapy really shines.

When it comes down to it, cognitive-behavioral therapy isn’t for all people or disorders. You have to be willing to put in the time and effort to make the changes, and must be willing to seek help. As with all therapy, you have to believe that it will work before you start seeing results, and put aside all cynicism until you’ve given it a fair chance. In the end though, I think that cognitive-behavioral therapy works better than any pill you can find out there because it helps your permanently solve the problems coming from within yourself instead of just temporarily patching up a hole.

Clinical depression is being more and more made aware of as people are informed about the seriousness of this medical illness. This condition can have harmful effects on how you feel emotionally and the way you think, as well as affect how you act. People who suffer from clinical depression are often found to have lack of interest in activities they may have once had a passion for, as well as have extended moments of feeling sad, lonely or hopeless. Many people compare the illness to normal daily emotions that every person experiences without realizing that clinical depression cases are not the same.

For instance, going through depression stages can have an impact on eating habits, work and study habits, and the process of how you think and feel. This can cause a commonly known feeling among suffers who describe that they no longer feel like themselves. This type of illness is found in people from all walks of life – different age, gender, culture, religion and ethnicity are all eligible to suffer from clinical staged depression. There are over 17 million Americans who are known to be affected each year according to the American Psychiatric Association.

Within clinical depression are several different types and stages, these are to be determined by professional mental health psychiatrists and counselors who are properly trained to identify and diagnose clinical depression before it is treated. This type of depression is commonly gone untreated, but with the right help, those who reach out for treatment report getting much better within a few months, some in as short as a just a few weeks.

In order to determine if you or a loved one should be evaluated by professional help to find out if the issue’s cause is clinical depression you should keep your eye out for a few indicators. Loss of motivation and attentiveness in daily activities, anti-socialism, extended periods of feeling sad or empty, restlessness, sudden weight loss, lack of focus, fatigue and suicidal thoughts or behaviors can all point to symptoms of this depression illness. The best treatments for the majority of depression forms include psychological counseling with the addition of medications like antidepressants. Medications can be used to provide relief from symptoms caused by depression, while on the other hand counseling is considered a key part of the solution by helping the person identify and cope with the problems that are at the root of the depression.

I think I can speak for everyone when I say that we’ve all had feelings of stress when faced with handling more than we are accustomed to. When your body goes through the effects that stress causes, it notifies it as a sign of danger to your system. This can result in the release of hormones, in turn speeding up your heart rate, increased breathing and unexpected bursts of energy – this is often a term known as a “fight-or-flight” stress response.

But excessive doses and extended phases of stress can definitely have negative effects to your physical and emotional well-being. Stress has been linked to back and muscles pains, headaches, stomach pains and restlessness. It can also play a role in weakening your immune system, if you already have a medical history with health problems, stress can cause additional problems. It’s known to make it’s victims tense, irritable, moody and depressed – these elements can make a big effect on daily life such as relationships, schooling and the work place.

To look at the brighter side of stress, there are many ways a person can manage their stress and get it under control by learning a few methods. The first and most important step to managing stress is to find out the cause for the majority of it, ask yourself the reason you experience high levels of stress. After you’ve notified the key causes you can then research the ways you can reduce stress while applying your specified situation, I virtually guarantee there are a variety of healthy strategies that can help relieve the stress and decrease it’s negative effects.

In most cases it will be easy to identify where the stress comes from like a death in the family, at other times it is harder to put your finger on the cause. Keeping a notepad or journal of your feelings of stress can help, record the way your body and mind responds to the stress, everyone will react differently. The fact is stress is a way of life and will never go away completely, but having knowledge of how stress works and how what you do in life can effect it can greatly help in managing it. Try things like budgeting your time and taking care of prioritized tasks first, reevaluate the way you cope and deal with your problems – be honest with yourself. Give proper attention to your body, make sure you are getting sufficient nutrition and rest.. avoid harmful things like smoking and alcohol. Having support plays a huge factor in a minimal-stress life, having a strong-supporting set of family and friends can go a long way.

The best way to understand the mechanics of anxiety issues is to first learn the hints and symptoms of anxiety when it occurs. There are many things that can happen to a person experiencing an anxiety attack, for some people this is an everyday occurrence, but since there are a number of these symptoms that can be related with other problems it’s often overlooked as the cause. Everyone, specifically those who know or think they have the condition, should have a general knowledge on when these symptoms take place to efficiently handle them.

<!--
google_ad_client = "pub-6839117441037346";
/* 336x280, created 12/04/10 */

Take the signs into account by understanding what anxiety is. Everyone goes through moments in their daily life that, at one point or another, cause them to feel depressed or feel worried and nervous. Although these are all completely normal emotions for any person to go through from time-to-time, suffers of anxiety disorder experience these same issues at a much more intense level. These disorders can range from subtle and mild conditions to moderate and severe, in fact observation claims that in many cases anxiety in small doses can actually work in benefiting it’s host. For instance, if a person experiences anxiety due to pressure caused by an upcoming deadline on a task it can provide the attentiveness and focus needed to get the work done.

Aside from the potential advantages of anxiety, people suffering from severe anxiety disorder do not gain much positive perks from it, but go through problems that obstruct their general well-being. Some precognitions of a person going through anxiety is feeling overwhelmed and worried, helplessness, inability to focus, and extreme irrational levels. All of these things being experienced in extreme variables can put a big effect on what the host of the disorder considers a normal way of life – in some cases this illness can be so intense that, without proper medical attention, can become a life threatening issue.

Anxiety symptoms can be broke down and sorted out into two main categories: emotional and physical. Both of these types of symptoms come along with their own set of effects and results on the person, most of which are induced by a specific situation. It’s not uncommon for the person to feel a rush of relief and a new-found relaxation after the situation passes them, but the persistent and common issues will not let one enjoy it for long.

Physical symptoms of anxiety are made up of a combination of things that the person can sometimes learn to mask with time. Loss of breath and increased heartbeat at rapid rates are initial signs of anxiety, including experience of twitching, trembling and uncontrollable shaking or moving. If a person is feeling pressure in their chest and throat area or experiencing intense perspiration followed up by the cold-chills or cold and clammy hands, these are also some of the symptoms. Other physical symptoms include muscle tension, aches and soreness, sudden rushes of energy or fatigue, restlessness and problems sleeping.

“I am very angry and filled with rage. I cannot express my anger, but I feel it. This anger permeates into every part of my being. It helps me to stay alive. It gives me energy to exist. It seems to be functioning to protect me. It is like a person standing over me and protecting me. It feels as if the rage has torn me apart and allows one part of myself to take care of the parts that cannot take care of themselves. My anger and rage are being put to work to function in a way that is helping me inside. This anger and rage is inside waiting to come out. It cannot come out now because it has an important job to do, but when it does it will fill a very large room.”

What is this autistic boy telling us? We can break up his message into two parts: 1) the dissociation experienced by individuals with autism and 2) how emotions such as rage and anger function within the individual with autism.

He seems to be telling us that he can feel his anger and rage, but more importantly cannot express it. From his vantage point, these emotions seem to be functioning as an internal protective mode. They protect the weaker parts of himself that cannot protect themselves. It is like they are functioning as people who are protecting him.

In some regards this can make sense. The individual has not had a completed attachment and thus is left in a dissociated unconscious state (lowest functioning child with autism). This changes as the child develops. Thus he can become more conscious and less dissociated and then we would call him high functioning or with Asperger’s. Eventually he may not be identified as being on the autism spectrum at all.

It is important to note that from the perspective of an incomplete attachment the child is functioning in a normal state of dissociation. Parts of the self are not conscious to or available to the person to use in their communications with others. It is the state that the person with autism lives. Bromberg (1994)* believes all individuals begin life made up of multiple self-states. Our wholeness develops through a relationship with another person during the attachment process. Because the person with autism lacks an attachment, he remains in a non-whole state of existence. Thus the individual has different parts of himself that have not been validated, remain unconscious and are also not integrated.

In this situation, this autistic boy not only is in a normal state of dissociation, but also as he lives in this state of dissociation and as he develops, he learns to adapt to the situation and parts of himself (in this case his rage and anger) become internal methods to handle and cope with his dilemma.

I believe that as he develops a significant relationship with a person who understands his predicament, together they can forge an attachment that will help him to become less dissociated. He will be able to communicate his rage and anger and other emotions as he becomes less dissociated. As this occurs, he will be able to communicate the feelings that up to this point have only been internalized.

It is important to note that some individuals with autism are filled with rage and anger and that as they do develop we see more of the explosive anger coming out. Some individuals seem to be filled with inordinate amounts of anger. I think of this from three perspectives: 1) the excessive anger might be due to his rage at not having had a direct outlet for these emotions. In other words, he had to live without access to his emotions so he is filled with anger that has never previously seen the light of day, 2) when anger is dissociated, the child does not have control over this emotion. Until his angry feelings are understood, they will come out as intermittent explosive acts of rage and 3) he probably has lots of angry feelings towards others that have not helped him to express his anger. This may not seem logical, but I would imagine the child with autism looks to the caregivers and others to know how to solve his dilemma and when this does not occur in a reasonable period of time, his anger may grow. When he finally has access to his emotions, there is what I think of as a lot of residual anger to deal with. Thus it would be important that when working with individuals with autism from a relational perspective, to expect this build up of anger to come forward. This will be a positive move for the individual with autism, but caregivers and others may not know how to manage their own feelings when they are bombarded with these angry emotions.
