Reduce Drama to Reduce Panic Attacks

Many health care professionals agree that events can trigger panic attacks. While the exact cause of panic attacks is unknown, it is safe to say that any number of things can set off or trigger an attack.  For example, someone that’s claustrophobic may suffer a panic attack when they find themselves in a crowded elevator.

People that suffer from anxiety attacks need to learn how to control them once they occur and how to prevent them from happening in the first place.  For this reason, it makes sense to avoid as much drama as possible in order to reduce the risks of an onset of a panic attack.

With all the drama that takes place in the world around us, it may be a good idea for those that are prone to panic attacks to turn off the television when the news is on.  The media delivers the worldwide news in such a fashion that we may perceive situations as threats, even though a situation might be taking place halfway around the world.  Many of the events that are happening in today’s world can create a knee jerk or fight or flight response in people that suffer from an anxiety disorder.  Therefore, it makes perfect sense to avoid the morning news and the bad news it usually holds.

The same theory holds true regarding relationships with people in your life.  If you are prone to anxiety attacks, it’s probably a good idea to limit the amount of time you spend with people that are surrounded by drama.  Of course, there are some people we cannot avoid, like our spouse or our children, but there is no reason to get involved with situations that are going on in the lives of your friends, co-workers, or neighbors.  Don’t think of staying out of these situations as being anti-social or uncaring; consider it as a survival mechanism.  Anxiety attacks might not be medically threatening, but they are scary and very unpleasant.

When you’re trying to control the onset of panic attacks, spend time doing things that are pleasant and relaxing.  Take time out of your busy day to take a leisurely stroll in the park.  If you don’t live near a park, walk around your neighborhood, but be sure to avoid those neighbors that live drama filled lives.

Take some time to learn relaxation and breathing techniques that will help relieve stress.  When you take steps to reduce the amount of drama in your life, you will be taking steps toward reducing the number of panic attacks you suffer from.
