Depression Support 101

Clinical Depression is an increasingly prevalent problem in society- fortunately, many people can be helped with medication, therapy or both. Unfortunately, some people can remain depressed even after years of therapy and multiple tries with anti-depressants. As a chronic sufferer of refractory (hard to treat) depression, I am writing this article for all those who may feel there is no help left. I will try to keep things simple but upbeat. I know you are probably exhausted and really need depression support, thus please keep reading.

Write down everything in your life that you are lucky to have. If you have tons of people that care about you, a good job, or a nice house then you should consider yourself lucky. Think about all of the people that have none of those things. There are people in the world that don’t even know how they are going to get their next meal. Think about how fortunate you are to have the things that you do have and how worse it would be if you didn’t have them. If you can, help someone less fortunate than yourself. Helping someone else is a wonderful feeling that serves as effective depression support.

Have a good cry. Don’t hold back your feelings. Sometimes just locking yourself in a room and letting it all out will cheer you up. If it doesn’t make you happier, it will at least allow you to relax and release some tension.

Increase awareness of your depression symptoms by recording them in a daily diary or journal for personal depression support. Monitoring your thoughts and feelings on paper will make them easier to process and overcome.

Seek support from others who suffer from depression and can identify with your condition. The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance website provides a Depression Support Group Directory based on location.

Avoid isolation. Make an effort to socialize through your community or place of worship. Reach out to others by placing phone calls when in need of depression support.

Everyone has their own mental hurdles. For a depressed person, overcoming those can be even more difficult. They may be something small and seemingly silly like not wanting to cook hamburger for dinner. Ask your friend to honestly tell you his/her hurdles and see if you can help. Maybe you can schedule a weekly walk or make extra food and take over a casserole a week.

Don’t get upset or fed up with your friend and tell him or her “Snap out of it already” or “Pull yourself up by your bootstraps.” Recognize that depression is an illness, not a choice. You wouldn’t tell your friend to snap out of diabetes and just eat some sugar already so don’t take that approach to someone who has depression.
