As the days get colder, darker and all around shorter, it can become difficult to lift your spirit. You may feel like you’re in a rut and that there is nothing to look forward to anymore. If this sounds like you, you may be one of thousands of people around the United States suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder, otherwise known as SAD. There are several ways to combat SAD that I have listed below, but you should also visit your primary physician for more in-depth advice.
- First you need to recognize your depressive feelings. In most cases, SAD involves depression, hopelessness and anxiety all rolled into one. As you can imagine, unrecognized, these feelings can have a truly negative impact on a person’s day. So the first step to overcoming SAD is to recognize and acknowledge these feelings. You should realize that they are not representative of your normal state. Then you must commit yourself to overcoming these negative feelings.
- Next, make an effort to turn your constant negative thoughts into positive ones. You’ve got to look on the bright side of things. Every time your mind falls into the pattern of negativity, stop yourself and reverse the thought. You are in control of your thoughts and feelings, so take control.
- Next, avoid isolating yourself. Get outside and do something with your friends or family. Staying inside every night will just magnify your negative feelings. If this has become a habit for you, you may need to push yourself a little, but it will certainly be worth the effort.
- Make sure you do positive things for yourself during this season. Whether it’s listening to uplifting music or installing a new truck air intake in your F150, just make sure it’s something you enjoy and something that will start you on a positive track.
Don’t worry, spring will be here soon enough, but if you feel you are really struggling with SAD make sure to visit your physician as soon as possible.
