Anxiety Relief – Train Your Brain To Turn Off Anxiety

We all have some anxiety in our life; it’s a natural part of the human condition.  It’s when that anxiety becomes so acute that it starts interfering with our lives that it becomes a problem.  If you find yourself more and more anxious over some or all aspects of your life, you really need to consider finding a solution to the problem rather than just hoping it will go away.

Really acute anxiety can trigger panic attacks which in turn starts an endless cycle of fear of panic attacks that in the worse case, can lead you to being a prisoner in your own home.  This sever condition is called agoraphobia.

If you’re not there yet, if you simply have a feeling of uneasiness or impending fear that something bad is going to happen, then you may be able to literally think your way out of it.

Think back to the last time that you felt completely calm and relaxed.  Sure that’s a mental state but there was also a physical state as well.  Your muscles felt relaxed and fluid.  You may have experienced a sense of lightness.  The old expression “it felt like a ton of bricks was lifted off my shoulders” accurately describes our response when anxiety or stress is relieved.

I can remember a trip to Maui a couple of years back.  That island is like a picture postcard so it’s not surprising that there are many beautiful sites.  But one evening we were driving from our condo to Lahaina where we planned to eat dinner at my favorite restaurant.

We had just pulled onto Front Street when all of the traffic started pulling off to the side of the road.  We did the same.  Everyone got out of there cars and walked the short distance to the skinny strip of beach.  The sun was setting.

It was magnificent. The sun was spreading these glorious colors all across the evening sky.  It was almost otherworldly.  And it was quiet.  There must have been 50 to 60 people there but nobody said a word.  They were all wrapped up in this pure beauty almost as if they had been hypnotized.  And in a sense they had been.  I felt an incredible sense of peace.  I felt light.  I don’t know how else to explain it.

When the sun finally sank its impression on me lingered.  We got back in the car and made our way to Longhi’s restaurant where despite an incredibly rude waiter, I had the time of my life and ate the best fillet mignon I had ever had.  Or did I?  Maybe my brain was just not in the mood to have a bad time.  Maybe it just ignored what I normally would have made a big deal out of simply because it was in a pleasure mode.

Later, I really started thinking about the experience and tying it in with similar ones I had.  It seemed to me that in some instances, I could simply recall the feeling and experience it again.  I thought how neat would that be if I could do it at will.  No more anxiety over meetings, more self confidence, no more getting that occasional edgy feeling.

That led me to researching something called binaural beats.

This is a science that goes back over 100 years but really wasn’t researched seriously until the late 50s.  The brain gives off “waves” which can be measured by an EEG.  The length or frequency of these waves can identify the “mode” the brain is in.  For example when the brain experiences anxiety it gives off one frequency, when it is calm another, when it is engaged in creativity another and so on.

These waves and their frequencies have been cataloged.  Binaural beats, along with monaural beats are designed to introduce a tone or beat to the brain through the ears via stereo headphones.  The brain hears these beats and is entrained into creating waves of the desired frequency.  Bringing the brain to an Alpha wave for example, places the brain in a state of calm.

OK that’s all an oversimplification, but for most of us all we need to know is that you can listen to these beats (they are usually masked with peaceful sounds like rain or waves) and train our brain to relax.  It takes a bit of practice but the ultimate goal is to call upon the brain to enter a specific frequency on demand.

For a person with frequent anxiety, how great a tool would this be?  How would that change your life?

I know it sounds a little new age but it isn’t.  It’s founded in science.  If it sounds like a viable option for you, then you owe it to yourself to give binaural beats a try.

How much of your life is influenced by anxiety? Is it limiting what you do and where you go? Would you be at least willing to listen to a free binaural video to see if it helps? Do yourself a favor and visit http://brainwavesymphony.blogspot.com right now!
