Nausea, blinding flashes of light, seeing stars, painful pressure on the sides and front of your head; there is nothing worse than a severe migraine headache hitting you at the end of the day. Just when you are about to relax after a long stress filled day, it hits you like a runaway dump truck turning your chill time into ill time. Go figure right?
Psychological stress is oftentimes the underlying cause of migraines, so it is not coincidence that these painful predicaments strike when you are just trying to relax after a long stress filled day. Most people tend to know when a migraine is coming on, and the resulting stress from this feeling usually helps bring on the pain. When you feel the vice like pain creeping around your head the best thing that you can do is to not panic and use one of the following remedies to help relieve yourself from the pain.
First, have a seat. Then relax your head and allow it to be as limp as possible, letting your chin fall into your chest. Now, rotate your head clockwise a few times then rotate it counter clockwise the same number of times. This relaxation technique is a good way to help loosen up after a hard days work. Doing a little bit of light exercise might also help you relax, especially if you have a desk job. When you feel a headache creeping up on you, try some yoga or a swimming to exercise it out.
If you are not the type to take aspirin or other pharmaceuticals for headache relief, then you might one to give the herb, feverfew, a try. Feverfew has been used for centuries as a folk remedy for headaches and fevers. This plant helps by reducing blood vessel spasms, which are usually the cause of for headaches. If you suffer from frequent attacks, try taking 25 mg of freeze-dried pulverized leaves daily. If you suffer from a severe acute migraine, try taking 1 or 2 grams.
Another way to help prevent headaches is to pay attention to what you are eating throughout the day. Stimulants like chocolate, coffee, even soda can cause migraines as can alcohol, citrus, wheat, MSG and dairy products. Foods loaded with nitrites such as hotdogs and lunchmeat can also exacerbate the headache. Even the stuff at the salad bar can cause migraines since many restaurants add chemicals to their veggies to keep them looking fresh for a longer period of time.
Taking a nice hot batch and following it up with a cold shower is a good way to cure your self of a powerful migraine. Fill the tub with hot water, add some Epsom salts and relax for 20 minutes then get out, drain the water and take a cold shower spraying your body from head to toe for a good three minutes. Towel off, dress and then relax in bed. If you can stand this hot to cold stuff (not everybody can), you will improve your blood circulation and reduce head congestion.
Hopefully, one of these remedies works out for you. The best way to take care of your headache is to try to find the underlying cause of it. Once you do, you will be able to rid yourself of them once and for all.
