Depression is a nasty emotional stew of sadness, apathy, and anger. Any tool you bring to bear against it is good. I suggest you try laughing on a regular basis. Nobody would be depressed if they spent just a few minutes every day laughing. Countless studies have shown that laughter lowers blood pressure and raises the levels of seratonin and dopamine in the brain. Simply put, laughter is quite probably nature’s most potent anti-depressant.
The truth is that it is difficult to laugh when you are depressed. Jokes are almost never funny to a depressed person. That’s because jokes are just words, stories from which we are disconnected. To achieve laughter, find something in the real world and make it funny: Prank someone.
Unlike jokes, pranks are active. The prankster momentarily tricks someone, transforming them into a bit of a fool. (Do not harm anyone with a prank, just trick them.) When all is said and done, you both laugh. Pranks last longer than jokes, too. They can be repeated, talked about years later and even recorded for posterity.
The most important aspect of a good prank is that person being pranked is taken by surprise An normal, everyday, humdrum event becomes unusual. For example, attach a $20 bill to a piece of fishing line and place it on the sidewalk. When someone stoops over to pick it up, pull it away. A good prank can ease every negative emotion associated with depression. Developing a prank forces you to “get out of bed” mentally as you devise it. If anger is an issue for you, tricking someone can give you a sense of satisfaction (Please don’t be vindictive or harmful). If you are sad, happiness grows when your prank victim laughs at the realization that they have been duped.
