3 Simple Strategies For Managing Depression

Managing depression is possible if you know the steps to follow and make them a part of your daily habits. In fact, rather than just managing this disorder, it is possible to overcome it. In this article, you’ll learn three simple steps that will help you do just that.

There are many ways to manage depression including prescription drugs, behavioral therapy and natural remedies. Some of these strategies are more effective for certain people and depend on your budget. Let’s take a quick look at each of these strategies.

Although managing depression by taking prescription drugs is effective for some people, a large percentage of the population don’t do well on them. For instance, my mother took an antidepressant years ago that made her feel even more depressed. Worse yet, in addition to having a flat affect, it increased her sense of gloom and doom, so that she became almost paranoid, waiting for some horrible imagined event to happen. Her other side effects included weight gain and inability to sleep through the night. As you can imagine, this only worsened her sense of overwhelm.

There are two things that you need to think about when considering  prescription drugs: do the benefits outweigh the short and long term risks and do you really want to be on medication for the rest of your life. This is an important consideration because drugs are just a means of managing depression; they do not cure it.

A second way to treat this disorder is to go to a therapist. Behavioral therapists have techniques that they can teach you to help you make choices that will lift your mood. Although this is a good adjunct therapy to use along with drugs or natural remedies, on its own, it is usually not sufficient. Therapy for depression can get expensive because it can be long term.

The third way of treating depression is with herbs that have been used for centuries. Specialty formulations containing standardized ingredients like St. John’s Wort and Passion Flower have been clinically proven to be effective for managing depression and actually promote healing by giving the brain the nutrients it needs to function properly.

Now that we’ve talked about the different ways to manage depression, let’s talk more about the healthy route because this is what has worked for my friends and mother, all of whom had previously struggled with taking prescription drugs. The first step is to start taking a natural remedy with the ingredients mentioned above. Do this for a couple of months and then as your mood begins to lift, the second step is to make small changes to your diet, eating healthy foods in place of processed foods.

As the natural remedy and healthy diet start to increase your energy and generate a positive outlook, add exercise to further boost your progress. Moderate daily exercise is an excellent tool for managing depression because it relieves stress, cleans the lymph system and makes you feel good, strong and centered.

So that’s the program: a natural remedy with proven ingredients for managing depression, a healthy diet to give your brain the nutrients it has been craving and a regular exercise program to relieve stress and refresh you. These simple steps can have a profound effect on your mood and the quality of your life. Get started.  You can do it!
